It took me a while to decide what topic I wanted to focus on today. There are enough idiots on the internet to populate a small country. If science could somehow power the world on human idiocy we would have a sustainable, renewable, never-ending supply of energy. So, not being starved for options, it took me a while to decide on Social Networks.
Social Network is a blanket term for a variety of website, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, google+, even YouTube can be considered a social network. If you’ve explored the internet at all then you may belong to one of these social networks or even multiples. Anymore, if you belong to one social network it’s like you automatically get a membership to another one. For instance, if you have an account with Google you automatically have a gmail, google+, and youtube accounts.
Deaths from Social Networks
Personally I think social networks are mostly useless. Just another way for us to keep the rest of the world at arms length. We don’t have to actually talk to anyone. All we need to do is post an update and instantly everyone on the internet is privy to our private lives. Does the world at large actually need an update on what we ate for lunch? No. The only person who needs to know what I had for lunch is me.
So back to stupid deaths caused by social networks.
Status Change Murder
Sarah Richardson was separated from her husband Edward. She evidently decided that since she and Edward were separated she should change her status to “single”, a move that angered her husband. He got so angry that he went to the home of Sarah’s parents where she was staying. He broke in to the house and killed his estranged wife. Then he tried to kill himself. He is currently serving 18 years for murder. You can read the full story here, but beware it isn’t a nice story.
Grounded Teen Kills Father
A 15 year-old, Hughstan Schlicker, was grounded by his father from using MySpace. Evidently he started posting suicide notes to his account and someone decided to call the cops. The cops called his parents and his father decided to take care of the problem by taking away his internet privileges. That’s when he decided to kill his father. Well to be honest he decided to kill himself and his father. In a totally idiotic move he laid out his plan for a double homicide. He decided that if his father came home before 4:00pm he would kill his father and then commit suicide, but if he came home after that time he would abort the plan. Well, his father came home at about 2:00pm and now Hughstan’s serving 20 years in prison. You can read more about this screwed up young man here, although with a name like Hughstan no wonder he’s screwed up.
Fatal Car Chase Starts as Facebook Feud
Torrie Lynn Emery and Danielle Booth were in a Facebook feud over a man. I think that the feud went something like this:
“He’s my man.”
“Nuh-uh, He’s my man so step off or I’ll cut you.”
“Oh yeah?! Well, if I ever see you I’ll run you down with my car.”
And then putting words to deeds, Torrie saw her rival and went after her with her car. Fortunately (or unfortunately), Danielle was in a car as well. She was in Alesha Abernathy’s (her friend) car. Torrie started ramming Alesha’s car which no doubt scared her and a high speed chase ensued. The end result is that Alesha, in order to get away from Torrie, ran a red light and her car was struck by a truck, killing her and critically injuring Danielle. Now, Torrie has probably lost her man and was charged with second-degree murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, and child abuse. That’s right child abuse. While all this was going on Torrie had her 3 year old in the car with her. I shudder to think of the therapy in that kid’s future. You can read more here.
Fatal Stabbing Over MySpace Photos
This next incident is reminiscent of the previous case. Here we have two teens feuding over a another teen. Rachel Wade was involved in a love triangle with Sarah Ludemann, both of them dating the same boy. Threat were exchanged, they had confrontations, [insert appropriate teen, angst-filled drama description here] kind of things. Things came to a head when Rachel killed Sarah, stabbing her in the heart with a steak knife. Wade is now serving 27 years for second degree murder. The story is a bit muddy with the defense claiming self-defense and the prosecution claiming that the stabbing was violent enough to bend the knife. However, it was clear enough for a jury to proclaim her guilty. For more information check this article.
Here’s a story to show that women aren’t the only one to succumb to online idiocy. Again things get a little muddy so you may want to do some research yourselves. Jameg Blake and Kwame Dancy were friends, growing up together in Harlem and living in the same building, on the same floor. They started “dissing” each other over Twitter. Twitter may only allow you to post 140 characters at a time, but you can get through a fair number of insults in one day. They also had a falling out over a girl a few months prior to the murder. Anyway, Blake shot Dancy in the neck with a shotgun, permanently ending their troubled friendship. You can find more information here.
Comments Killed My Girlfriend
I’m not sure where to go with this one. There is so much stupidity involved. Matthew Dubois and Mikarah “Tinky” Sanders (Tinky is the first piece of stupidity) were dating. I’m sure it was a definite case of teen love. So, some boy starts posting comments to Tinky’s MySpace page, and Dubois got jealous. In the confrontation that ensued Dubois shot Tinky in the face at point blank range. He then shot himself in the shoulder and blamed it on a gang member who didn’t exist. What makes this more tragic and stupid is that Dubois was already wearing an electronic ankle monitor for other crimes. You can get more info from the story here.
My Ex Needs to Get Off My Back
Some people are just too dumb to use Facebook. Adam Mann’s ex-wife decided to put their connection through Facebook to good use…by harassing him for Child support. Personally I think that if you don’t pay your child support you should be subjected to worse that just Facebook comments. So, instead of doing something logical like blocking his ex-wife’s comments he kills her and leaves her for his 5 year-old son to find. What an evil little waste of skin. If you want more of the graphic details check here.
Teens Use Facebook to Plan Murder
How stupid do you have to be to plan a murder using a public internet forum? A group of teenagers decided to murder Sofyen Belamouadden. In order to accomplish the task they used Facebook to communicate the details to each other. Then to compound their stupidity they killed him in a train station during rush hour while being recorded on CCTV. They also wore a glove on their left hands to distinguish themselves from the bystanders. I am saddened by two things in this account: the death of a young man, it never should have happened, and the idiocy of the murderers, they should have been caught before they were able to do anything. Why didn’t anyone call the police? Did they think that they wouldn’t go through with it? Where was the failure in the chain of events that lead to these young men being arrested after the fact. You can find more information here.
Why Didn’t We Stop Deranged Teen
Alyssa Bustamante was a very disturbed young woman. This girl had the audacity to list murder as one of her hobbies on her YouTube page. Bustamante left plenty of evidence around, she wasn’t exactly subtle about what she did. I don’t want to go into the details, but she killed a little girl just to find out what it felt like. These people are usually called psychopaths. You can read more about this twisted young woman here.
You may be asking your self if today’s topic fits with the theme of the blog. I think it does. I think that every single one of these murders or deaths could have been prevented. Each of these deaths was the result of stupidity that went too far. You don’t ignore someone who lists murder as a hobby. If you don’t like someone’s comments block them. If someone starts planning a murder online…report it. The internet is a privilege, not a right, deal with it. You can see in each of the incidents where idiocy prevailed and common sense failed.
