Thanks for returning to the blog that is trying to keep you alive. This week I would like to turn your attention to windows. Windows are great. They let in the light while keeping out the bugs. They let you see the view without exposing you to adverse elements. Where would man be without windows? We’d either be living in the dark or our houses would be very drafty. However, you didn’t come here to hear me extol the virtues of the window. You came to get that little piece of knowledge that will save your life.
Take a look at this video and you will discover the connection between windows an lethal stupidity.
Turns out that a man by the name of Garry Hoy decided to impress the groups of students that they were courting for possible employment came to tour the law firm, Holden Day Wilson, where he worked by throwing himself into the window the of the highrise, the Toronto-Dominion Centre, where his office was situated. The stunt was performed to show the students that the windows were unbreakable. And indeed the intrepid Garry had performed this stunt numerous times. We can say this for Garry, not only was he an intrepid individual, but he was unimaginative (he was an engineer and a lawyer) and rather reckless. He obviously couldn’t imagine that he was putting his life in danger. I mean, so far the glass hadn’t broken. It had withstood all of his assaults. So he decided to perform his go to stunt one more time…and plunged to his death out the window of the 24th floor.
What he was expecting was what happened in at the beginning of this clip. What he got was the first clip.
To be fair to the lawyer, the window didn’t break until it hit the ground. I know that is scant comfort to his family and friends. I also know that he probably wasn’t comforted by that fact as he fell. He probably wasn’t saying to himself as he neared the ground, “Well, at least the glass didn’t break. That would have been embarrassing”. In this case, it was actually the window frame that failed. Even so, glass or frame he still did something incredibly stupid. With all his intelligence he didn’t have the sense God gave a squirrel, probably something to do with being an engineer.
If you are like me you want to have some confirmation especially in the information age. There are so many stories and urban legends floating around that just aren’t true. Well, the previous link there is for the Wikipedia page dedicated to the incident. However, if you are like me you want to have a little more corroboration than a Wikipedia page. So here are the proofs:
- Through A Glass, Quickly
- Law firm Goodman and Carr shutting down
- Lawyer Aloft
- Mythbusters Episode P2 – “Vacuum Toilet, Biscuit Bazooka, Leaping Lawyer”
So, let that be a lesson to you the next time you feel yourself temped to commit autodefenestration by testing the strength of the window that is keeping you from plunging headlong to your death. Windows can be dangerous and are best appreciated from one side or the other, just not in the transition between the two.
