Car accidents claimed around 1.24 million people in 2010, 34,080 of them in the US. Let’s just say that if some of these accidents weren’t related to stupidity we wouldn’t be discussing it here. Car accidents take many forms, there’s distracted driving (the reason for anit-texting while driving laws), drunk driving, reckless driving, adverse conditions, and trying to avoid children/obstacle in the road. Some types of accidents are avoidable, some not so much. Hitting a patch of ice while driving can cause an unavoidable accident. I say can, because the outcome can depend on whether there are other cars in the area and how fast you are going.
Here is a video that will have you doing your utmost to avoid ever driving in Russia. After watching this video I’m surprised that Russians drive in Russia.
So, first of all I would like to say that the fact that so many Russians drive around with dash cams is awesome. Second, the reasons that make dash cams are so prevalent in Russia are a bit disturbing. For discussions as to why dash cams are so widely adopted in Russia you can check out the following articles:
Now back to the video. Some of the scenes in the video don’t show drivers being idiots. There are two scenes that show military vehicle flyovers, one of a helicopter, the other of a jet. There is a scene where a car get struck by lightning, really cool by the way, probably scared the driver out of his mind. There are some videos that show debris in the road and pedestrians and other obstacles. However, there’s still a whole lot of stupidity in the video. This video has reckless driving, driving too fast for road conditions, and obstacle avoidance. I can only assume that distracted driving and drunk driving are also features of the video.
Now for the Highlights
I want to highlight a few of the scenes in the video that are definitely worth notice. This video has people driving way too fast, driving in the wrong lane, trying to drive through the cars stopped at the intersection, wheels coming off of trucks, drivers sliding in the snow. There are just too many scenes to try to go through them all.
This scene is just awesome. No stupidity involved. I might do lightning strikes in a future post if there’s enough to make a story. The scene is at the 4:15 mark.
Don’t Race the Ambulance
At the 0:42 mark there is a guy who seems to be racing an ambulance. I am baffled by this one. I can’t even fathom what might be going through his mind. Is he thinking that if he pulls over to let the ambulance pass he won’t get to where he’s going? Is he rushing home to make sure it isn’t going to his house? Maybe he called the ambulance and sent it to his house, but was late leaving work and didn’t want the ambulance to get to his house first. At any rate, he ends up getting rear-ended by the ambulance when he stops at for a pedestrian at a crosswalk.
Cars and Guns
A rather interesting incident involving cars, alcohol, guns occurs at the 1:38 mark. I infer that there was alcohol involved. Watch the clip and then tell me there isn’t. A pedestrian is standing in the road blocking traffic, the car bumps him gently (which is a testament to the driver’s skill), and the guy pull a gun and starts firing at the car. Russians are crazy.
There are a number of incidents involving trucks in the video. My favorite scenes are at 2:18 where a truck backs up into three cars, forcing them off the road. At the 4:41 mark where the truck takes out a light pole. Tell me he wasn’t driving distracted. At 5:16, where the truck takes the turn too sharp and dumps its cargo all over the road. It takes out two cars in the oncoming lane. At the 6:06 mark where the truck turns left trying to beat the oncoming traffic. He gets hit by a truck in the oncoming lane and the driver of that truck fall out of his truck. That’s right the accident rips the front off the truck and the driver falls out. At 6:22, there is a slow down at an intersection and the cars are blocking it. The driver of the truck just plows on through.
The first of my favorite scenes involving cars takes place at 2:04. The guy swerves across four lanes of traffic two same direction, two oncoming, then he lands in the ditch at the side of the road. At 4:26, this guy is all over the road. It is a miracle that the only thing he hits is the barricade at the side of the road. At 4:34, this idiot turns left from the center lane. I’m not talking about the center turn lane. There are six lanes of traffic, three in each direction and he turns from the center lane. Are we surprised that he get hit? No. Then at 6:59 another guy pulls the same trick, but turns right from the center lane. Again, are we surprised at the result? No. At 7:10, a car high-centers itself on a barricade. At 7:39, (probably the best scene) there is a car sliding down the road upside-down, spark flying. At 11:33, there is a car making a left-hand turn and successfully negotiates the turn and then sticks with a good thing. The last one is at 11:49. It shows a car going straight through the intersection. The problem is that it is only a three-way intersection. He goes straight through and into the grass on the other side.
There aren’t very many motorcycle incidents, but at 10:01 a motorcycle drives between two vehicles and then end up going off the road into a fence.
There is a weird scene at 4:56. I’m not sure what happened exactly, but I thinks the just robbed a bank and exploded the dye pack. You’ll have to check it out and see what you think.
Don’t drive in Russia, especially if you don’t have a dash cam!
